I said this in my blog post a few weeks ago:
Honestly. Here is abit of honesty. On Friday, I cannot for the life of me run half a mile at 7min mile pace
After I was thrown off the back of the treadmill, I remember standing there genuinely questioning how I was going to do this.
This Friday, 3 weeks later, I get on the treadmill and I am convinced it is broken. 7min miling is feeling too easy. This can’t be right. I have to spend a good hour, with my missus as witness, to check and recheck it. It is right. My fitness has jumped.
There was a recent study done here about how, if you train, then de-train, then train again, your muscles and genes will still remember, and come back even stronger. It’s called…
Epigenetic Memory of Hypertrophy
…but for me it just feels fantastic. Most blogs of mine I seem to be writing about some sort of struggle (breaking thumb, cutting leg, losing car keys etc etc), but that is not reality either. Some weeks DO go really well and smooth and without much drama. Please don’t unfollow me. I’m sure next week will be more interesting. Although I’m personally hoping it isn’t! “Zero Drama” is one of my New Years Resolutions.
Next week is Nick Beer 10km
Non-Running highlight of the week:
Our 1yr old girl, el, often wakes up in the night, and only mummy is allowed to put her back down. Well, on Friday night, for he first time ever, el deigned to let me do it.
Best thing on the internet this week:
Paediatrician asks some of his terminally ill child patients what they value most in life. I am reading it on twitter as I walk through the gym reception area – I have to run to the men’s to cry.
Take home message:
Be kind. Read more books. Spend time with your family. Crack jokes. Go to the beach. Hug your dog. Tell that special person you love them. These are the things these kids wished they could've done more. The rest is details.
Oh… and eat ice-cream. /End

Thing I’m digging this week:
Alex Yee was racing in a triathlon last year, aged 19, and had a horrific crash on his bike. He suffered cracked ribs, fractured vertebrae and collapsed lung. He got told he may never run again. This weekend, after 8 months of rehab, in his FIRST race back, Alex gets spiked in his foot at the start of the University XCountry Champs. He runs the whole race with a bleeding foot, wins, and is taken straight to hospital.
I like to think I am pretty good at spotting talent, but in truth, Alex is the worst kept secret in British Athletics. His balance, form, timing, are a joy to watch. Everyone can see he is the real deal. Reminds me of Asbel Kiprop. His coach, Ken Pike, knows his shit, and they can go all the way to the top.
